CSS Compulsory Subjects

Every CSS candidate sits these six papers. Each carries 100 marks and must be cleared individually, which is why past papers for the compulsory subjects deserve the earliest attention in your preparation.

Optional subjects are selected from seven groups under the FPSC scheme, up to a combined 600 marks. Read a few years of past papers before committing to a subject — the paper itself is the most honest guide to whether it suits you.

How to use CSS past papers

Downloading papers is the easy part. Use them in three passes — read several years together to map recurring themes, practise single questions against the clock, then sit complete papers under exam conditions.

Map the themes

Read ten years of one subject in a single sitting and tally what repeats. That ranked list should drive how you allocate study time.

Practise single questions

Write one full answer in the time it would get in the real paper. Three or four a week builds the reflex of outlining fast.

Sit complete papers

In your final three months, attempt whole papers handwritten and timed. Nothing else reproduces the fatigue of three hours.
